Zombie Dice

Today I'm going to be reviewing Zombie Dice..  What is this I hear?  Well if you like Dice and you like Zombies and not too much thinking then this game is going to be up your street.

Treasure Hunt for the 21st Century

Aside from my work and computers there isn't really that much that I do.  I sometimes read, but not very often.  I've been on the lookout for something fun to do and which I could do with Sarah during spare time.  Well I found something, thanks to one of my mates Dave.  We were out drinking on Christmas Eve when he told me about this new thing he and his daughter were upto called Geocaching.

A hunt through the database saves the day

I'm currently in the process of cleaning out old and disused moodle courses from the College system in preparation of the move to Moodle 2.  I went to a meeting and talked through a lot of courses, and I was told it was alright to delete a particular course as the teacher had left and no students had used it for ages.  So I went ahead and did it.  Then the problem happened.

Theming Moodle

During this academic year we are going to start work on upgrading our VLE from Moodle version 1.9 to Version 2.3 (which will be out when we do the upgrade).  I've already started to prepare the groundwork for this.  Firstly we are moving from Linux to Windows servers which is a job for our systems department - I'm not responsible for hardware thanfully.  Then we are going to link it into Active Directory which we haven't done before so that will be fun.

Moving on in the land of Education

A few months ago, our team was 4 strong.  A web developer (myself), an interaction specialist, a resource designer and a web designer.  To say we were streamlined was an understatement and not to blow our own trumpet, I thought we were a pretty good team.  Anyway our designer left to put all her efforts into her stationary business leaving us with a space for a new designer.  About the same time, the college decided to put  all their efforts into pushing the VLE which I am responsible for.

ALT-C 2011 Thoughts from a conference virgin

This was the first year that I attended the ALT-C so I wasn't really quite sure what to expect.  My thoughts were that it would mainly be HE delegates because of the timing, coming as it does during the first week of term in the FE sector.  And on the whole I would say I was correct, there were a few College delegates scattered here and there but most were from Universities.  But this did nothing to diminish my enjoyment and learning during the 3 days in Leeds.

Day 0 at ALT-C 2011

So I'm at Leeds University now, which seems to be built on the side of a hill.  This isn't a problem during the daytime as there are lifts in the buildings with multiple exits, but trying to put a wheelchair uphill at night is not an easy prospect, but at least I'll be working my sadly diminishing muscles once more.  When I checked in, I was given the tour of the Uni by a second year french student called Max - A really friendly and helpful guy - and then checked into my room.  Wow being a student here is like living in a travelodge!!!

Setting off to ALT

This week I'm off to the ALT 2011 Conference in Leeds.  I was asked a few month ago by my boss to get a qualification called CMALT, which is "Chartered Member of the Association of Learning Technologists"  Seems like a good idea I thought, so I finally signed up on the website and low and behold I then I got the opportunity to go to the Conference.  Hey!!!  Cool, I get to hang around with other geeks, network which is something I rarely get to do and get some ideas that I can share with the college hopefully.

So what I'm I going to do there?

FTP and Lion OS X

When Lion OS X came out I was at the front of the queue to download it and install it on my Macbook Pro and Mac Mini.  Add to that my Macbook Air and I'm all working the new OS.  Mostly I really like it, there are some great new features and some glitz that I won't really use.
