The Joy of Upgrading part 2

This is the second time I've written this post.  Damn Firefox crashed on me last time.  Note to self - Save drafts...  To continue the story of my upgrade to drupal 7 now...

Well after a few teething problems it worked itself out in the end.  There were some issued, like because I upgraded the database there were a few corrupt entries which screwed things up, but on the whole I'm pleased how it turned out.  I also learned a few things when it comes to upgrading.

  • Do some preparation.  Don't just dive into it, take some time to read what others have experienced. which leads onto the second lession.
  • Back up the database.  I can't stress this enough, it only takes two minutes and it'll save your content from disappearing into the eather when you mess up the upgrade and have to throw the database out and start again.  I must have had to do this at least half a dozen times because I didn't follow step 1 closely enough.
  • Read all the warning boxes.  Most windows users are that used to clicking every warning box that comes up they tend to never read them.  Well get out of that habit.  Read everything that it tells you, Drupal isn't just putting these warnings up for a giggle.

What was also helpful for me is that this blog sits on a mac mini server which is in my front room.  So I did't have to worry that if it went spectacularly wrong then I would loose the use of my server for a while.  The worst thing that would have happened was that I would have to trudge 10 meters into the front room and restart the box.

The last point about the upgrade is that I've lost my blue and white theme because this never version is a little different that the old one in how it displays, so I have to go and build a new theme.  At the moment I'm using one downloaded off the internet called samara.  I really like it but being a web developer I feel that I should really make my own for the site, so in the next few weeks I'm hoping that my blog is going to once again reflect more of 'me' in it.
