Surviving Christmas

Submitted by Kieran on Jan 04, 2011

Well what a Christmas this has been.  I had intended blogging more often over the festive holidays but then I made a conscious decision to try and stay off my mac as much as possible - I spend almost all day every day on the internet so I thought that it was time I tried wrenching myself away.  I pretty much managed to do that, hence why this blog post is so late.

So, what happened in the Briggs' household I hear you al scream?  Well it started really on Christmas Eve when I went out around town with my two best mates.  Now I need to explain something here:  I don't drink very much, maybe a bottle of Bud every other month, so you can imagine that I don't have much of a head for beer.  Meeting at the pub at 12 we started on the shorts and coke.  Double Jack  for me and Double Vodka for the guys to be precise.  The trouble with shorts is that they don't last long, and in a pub its a little rude to sit there without a drink.

By 2pm we were in our 4th pub and lost count how many drinks had flowed but we were all very happy.  Lunch followed and then onto drinking again.  I gave up at 6pm and went home convinced that I could act sober.  It turns out that according to the wife I couldn't.  Neither could Dave from the messages we read from his other half.

We spend the evening with Sarah's parents at our house, just chatting.  It was a nice night and enjoyable to have the in-laws over for a change.

I've never been able to sleep in Christmas morning, so at 7am I woke my lovely wife up and explained that I wanted to open my presents so we should get up.  This is a strange thing with being an adult, in that I knew everything that was wrapped up under the tree, but being able to rip open the paper and have it still made it special.  So we spent the first half hour opening our presents from each other, mainly books, DVDs and games.  At the end of the gifting session, Sarah disappeared into the bedroom and came back with "a surprise".  Sarah has never really been the kind of girl who does surprises so I was a little shocked.  I opened it and to my delight it was a Kymera TV Wand remote control.  I love it!!  It was on Dragon's Den a few months ago and I told her that I wanted one and she remembered.  What a star!!

Afterwards it was on to my parent's house for the day.  More present unwrapping, lots of food and then playing of board games.  We had a really great time with all the family, my sister, her son and her partner, brother, mum and dad.  But it was nice to get home at the end of the day; I was knackered.

Boxing day was more of the same except at Sarah's parents with her mum and dad, both grandpas and her uncle.

After all that it was great to spend the rest of the week just me and Sarah.  Its not often that happens so we made the most of it.

New Years eve, Andy my best man, came over and we got drunk again (not too much needed there) and played board games into the small hours.

So that was my Christmas.  I hope you all had similar nice times and spent time with your loved ones.
